The Smooth Jazz Cruise
St. Louis, MO:  Expect a Miracle at “The Greatest Party at Sea.” The stellar lineup to set sail from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean aboard The Smooth Jazz Cruise in 2012 was announced today by Jazz Cruises, LLC. Motown legend Smokey Robinson will make his debut on The Smooth Jazz Cruise that will be hosted by David Sanborn and Marcus Miller along with special event hosts Jonathan Butler and Gerald Albright. Reservations are now being accepted for the week-long musical voyages scheduled to depart January 15-22 and January 22-29, 2012.

Other stars that will perform aboard the Holland America M/S Westerdam to Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Barths and the private island of Half Moon Clay are Boney James, Rick Braun, Candy Dulfer, Eric Darius, Jeff Golub, Rahsaan Patterson, Patrice Rushen, Joe Sample, Brian Simpson, Peter White and DW3, the official party band of The Smooth Jazz Cruise. Alonzo Bodden will provide comic relief on the cruise while Pat Prescott and Dane Butcher will serve as event hosts and emcees.

“We are very proud and excited to announce the 2012 lineup. It is a very special lineup because we asked our guests who they’d most like to see perform on The Smooth Jazz Cruise and that’s who we booked. Our guests are our number one priority and we do everything we can to provide them with a fun, first-class experience and an unforgettable musical vacation,” said The Smooth Jazz Cruise’s executive director Michael Lazaroff. “In addition to the impressive array of instrumental and vocal talent that will sail with us, we’re thrilled about including a living legend, Mr. Smokey Robinson, in our cruise experience.”

The cruise attracts extraordinary repeat business: nearly sixty-percent of the guests return to sail aboard The Smooth Jazz Cruise again. In recognition of this remarkable loyalty, for the first time, a special rate will be offered for the 2012 cruise for guests who have sailed with the program four or more times. Due to popular demand, The Smooth Jazz Cruise 2011 marks the first time two sailings are offered: January 16-23 and January 23-30. Both excursions are virtually sold-out nine months ahead of the departure dates.

The original cruise in the genre, The Smooth Jazz Cruise, which sailed upon its maiden voyage in 2004, presents a wealth of opportunities to meet and get to know the artists personally off-stage in an out-of-the-ordinary setting. While sailing to exquisite ports of call in the Caribbean, guests enjoy nightly headline concerts with unique artist pairings to choose from in large showrooms as well as in more intimate lounges, cocktail parties hosted by the musicians, afternoon autograph and question & answer sessions, contests and even morning exercise classes. Guitar and Saxes ’10 is bringing back everyone’s favorite dynamic sax duo of Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum, along with the prolific guitarist Peter White and the G&S anchor, jazz/blues-man Jeff Golub. Coming off of one of last years most poplular tours, “Sax For Stax,” Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum are among the most repected, multi-dimensional and sought after saxophonists in the world.

Whatever Gerald Albright musically puts his mind to, from contemporary jazz to straight ahead, to funk and R&B, he stands in a class all on his own.

Joining Gerald on sax is one of contemporary jazz’s most talented and influential stars, the 8-time Grammy nominated (including one for his latest album, Roundtrip ), Kirk Whalum!

Contemporary jazz guitar superstar, Peter White is likewise rejoining Gerald and Kirk for this year’s amazing lineup. Armed with unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop, and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. White’s twelfth solo recording, Good Day , was released on peak in September 2009.

Anchoring the group is one of contemporary jazz’s most stellar, firmly established guitarists, and G&S vet, Jeff Golub. Jeff’s amazing blues drenched jazz transcends the genre’s boundaries, and his energy and spontaneity make for an unforgettable live show. Jeff recently released his debut album on E1 Entertainment in August 2009 entitled, Blues for You . With the mighty combination of Gerald, Kirk, Peter, and Jeff, Guitars and Saxes 2010 is arguable the best lineup conceived in its history.

Thirty-nine years ago, Richard Elliot was born in the Scottish highlands and was transplanted into the Los Angeles burbs when he was but a lad of three. Growing up, he primarily grooved to R&B and was especially smitten with the Motown sound. Mercurial and luminescent, the artist is now one of the brightest stars in the smooth jazz galaxy.

In 2005, Elliot joined trumpeter Rick Braun as they co-founded their own label, ARTizen Music Group (now known as Artistry Music). Their common project was called RnR and received high acclaims. In 2007, RnR, the title track from the dual album Elliot recorded with fellow genre superstar—and co-producer of People—Rick Braun, stayed at 1 on the chart for over two months. Elliot and Braun crisscrossed the U.S. as part of Jazz Attack (with Peter White and Jonathan Butler) in 2005 and 2007, and spent 2008 touring as RnR.  Now he tours again with his friend Rick Braun.

For nearly two decades, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience.

On the road, he has participated in numerous “Guitars and Saxes” tours with the aforementioned players, and has established an annual “Peter White Christmas Tour” – the latter enterprise fueled by the success of his two highly regarded holiday albums, Songs of the Season (1997) and A Peter White Christmas (2007).

Anita Baker will be a headliner at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 25th, and has just started work on a new album in Nashville, planned for release by Blue Note Records later in 2010.

“I’m going to Nashville to mix it up, shake it and see what comes out” says the eight-time Grammy winner with obvious glee. Baker will be producing the album with George Duke, Nathan East and Daniel Moore, recording in Nashville in part because, she explains, “they still know how to make a record in analog.”

In addition to some of the best country and R&B session players around, the album will also include Baker’s collaboration with Snoop Dogg on a “big, lush” version of Curtis Mayfield’s “Give You My Love” that she promises “is going to raise eyebrows.”

Acoustic Alchemy has a rich legacy based on the extraordinary airplay, sales and critical reception given the many early Webb-Carmichael led recordings followed by those helmed later by Carmichael and Gilderdale. Carmichael with each successive recording is carrying on a legacy begun by Webb and a guitarist named Simon James in the early 80s. The road to instrumental stardom began when Webb and Carmichael provided the one-off-in-flight entertainment for a Virgin Airlines England to America flight, in search of an elusive recording contract; they often liked to say they “played their way to America”. Signed to the MCA Master Series label by Tony Brown, their popularity took off in conjunction with the New Adult Contemporary radio format

Their early MCA albums-starting with Red Dust and Spanish Lace and continuing with 1988′s Natural Elements and 1989′s Blue Chip were all later re released on GRP. Last year, Verve released a successful greatest hits collection entitled The Very Best of Acoustic Alchemy, and Image Entertainment has just released Sounds of St. Lucia, a new CD/DVD live concert set based on a performance recorded for BET Television.

“The band has been through a lot of changes over the years, but the concept of two acoustic guitars has always been the emotional centerpiece which draws people close,” says Carmichael. “I’m happy these days because I love the people in the band and it’s great touring with them and playing live onstage. Miles is very quiet offstage, but get him up there and you never know what kind of crazy things he’s going to do and say! It’s really so much fun, and we have a lot of loyal fans who have enjoyed taking the journey with us. The positive spirit behind our music and album titles comes from the wonderful relationship we have with them.”
