To experience the contemporary jazz stylings of The Rippingtons is like taking a colorful and adventurous journey. Several Rippingtons albums have been inspired by the travels of founder, producer and creative force Russ Freeman, with titles like “Tourist in Paradise,” “Kilimanjaro,” and “Weekend in Monaco.” Collectively, their recordings have formed the life soundtrack for hundreds of thousands of contemporary jazz fans worldwide.

The Rippingtons were founded by guitarist/composer Freeman in 1986, at the dawn of the format that became known as smooth jazz. Jonathan Widran of JazzMonthly.com says, “Freeman’s incredible melodies and acoustic and electric playing . . . have been among the most consistently appealing mainstays in the genre’s rich history, meaning that fans can always count on the latest Rippingtons project to be a winner.” The same goes for their live performances, which display the musical mastery and creative energy of these true virtuosos in their field.

After 25 years and 18 studio albums, this Grammy-nominated powerhouse band continues to break new ground. On their last CD, Freeman and the Ripps took fans on the trip of a lifetime to the “Cote d’Azur.” Next time out, who knows? Freeman’s musical passport still has lot of open space to be stamped, and the journey continues.

Prepare to be transported by the music of The Rippingtons, who continue to refresh and redefine the genre of contemporary jazz. You’ll be glad you took the trip.

Al Jarreau

Called “the voice of versatility” and “one of the world’s greatest natural resources”. Al Jarreau’s unique vocal style is one of the world’s most precious treasures. His innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting and critically-acclaimed performers of our time with seven Grammy® Awards, scores of international music awards and popular accolades worldwide. MAI is grateful and excited that Al has consented to headline our 1st annual gala .

Gerald Albright

Albright has sold over 1,000,000 albums in the U.S. alone. His self-produced music features him on bass guitar, keyboards, flutes, drum programming, and background vocals. Gerald has definitely earned the reputation as the “musician’s musician.” Whether he is playing contemporary or straight-ahead jazz, Albright stands in a class all by himself. He is known for his swiftness on stage, his unique round sound which is percussive yet soulful. He has the ability to surprise the audience with something out of the ordinary.

Albright gives his audience what they come for – a great show! Soon, Albright began to make a name for himself as a sideman of great insight and musicianship, playing on albums by a wide variety of artists — including Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Lola Folana, Atlantic Starr, Olivia Newton-John, the Temptations and Maurice White. He also toured extensively with Les McCann, Rodney Franklin, Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie, the Winans, Marlena Shaw, Debra and Eloise Laws, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, and many others. With 9 CDs under his belt and one collaboration CD, Albright has definitely gained his place in the music world as a player, songwriter and producer.

Michael Manson

With the release of his previous CD, ‘Just Feelin It.’ Michael Manson joined the ranks of today’s premiere jazz artists. His first single “Coming Right At Ya” reached the top 10 on the R&B Smooth Jazz. Bass-master Michael Manson moved from sideman to center-stage on his solo debut, ‘The Bottom Line.’

His passion and precision are displayed with both unrelenting power and laid-back grace on the album that, he says, “reflects the deepest expression of all I have felt making music for the last twenty years.” “I’m happy to be joining the line up for this year’s gala. We will perform and have a great time with the purpose of helping our community foster a sense of excellence through music. Looking forward to it.”

Entertainment Cruise Productions, LLC and The Smooth Jazz Cruise announced today that George Benson, one of the most influential crossover musicians in contemporary jazz, R&B and pop, will perform at The Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater (“The Fred”) in Peachtree City, GA on Friday, June 1, 2012 to help launch The Smooth Jazz Cruise: The Greatest Party at Sea 2013.  Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10:00AM EST and are available at The Fred box office, Ticket Alternative outlets, via the Ticket Alternative phone line (800.745.3000) and online at www.ticketalternative.com.

Benson will be the special guest performer on The Smooth Jazz Cruise: The Greatest Party at Sea 2013, which will be his cruise debut.  The 10-time Grammy winner will perform shows over two days when the luxurious 7-day Caribbean cruise is in port at Cozumel.  At various points along the four-decade continuum of Benson’s illustrious career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both.  Benson is presently touring in support of his latest album, “Guitar Man.”  “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master said of his longevity.  “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories.  That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.”

Opening the concert at The Fred will be Atlanta-based jazz trumpeter Joey Sommerville, whose musical essence lies in the Baptist church.  “When I was a teenager, I would judge the caliber of my playing by the number of people in the congregation who ‘got happy’.  If you aren’t touching the listener’s soul, then you aren’t really playing music.  Soul communication is the key.”  His latest offering, “The Get Down Club,” is iconic, forward-thinking contemporary jazz featuring funk, gospel and bop influences delivered with pop sensibilities.
