Shoreline Jazz

Music enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys having a good time, may be happy to know that a jazz festival will return to Heritage Landing this summer. While the inaugural event in 2012 was the one-day Lakeshore Jazz Festival, this year’s festival features a new name – Alexander Zonjic’s Shoreline Jazz Festival — and an expanded schedule. The festival will be a two-day event this year, instead of the one-day event in 2012.

“I prefer to call the first one the pilot (festival),” said Alexander Zonjic, renowned flutist and co-organizer of the festival.

With a passion for jazz music and the Muskegon area, Hawkins Lang, the original organizer of the jazz festival in Muskegon, had an idea to create a music festival to celebrate the anniversary of his restaurant, Hawk’s Feathers and Finns. But what Lang didn’t expect while organizing the festival two years ago was the strong relationship he would begin to develop with Zonjic.

When the original headliner artist for the “pilot” jazz festival fell through, Lang came across Zonjic’s name, listened to his music and called Zonjic. Lang was surprised that Zonjic answered the phone. “I thought it was going to be his assistant (on the phone),” Lang said. From there, the two “just kind of hit it off.” Over time, Lang and Zonjic said they believe the festival will greatly benefit the area economically.

Zonjic, who has been both performing and working in the music festival business for more than 20 years, is excited about the Muskegon area. When he originally visited Muskegon, he said he knew Heritage Landing would be a wonderful place for a jazz festival. “My instincts kicked in and I thought ‘this would be so cool,’” Zonjic said. Zonjic said the idea of the festival is to have a large, cultural and diverse event in Muskegon.

Because the event is two days, Zonjic is hoping that jazz enthusiasts from Chicago and Detroit will visit the area. The music festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24. Tickets are expected to be available for purchase soon for the price of $25 per day.

The two-day jazz festival is set to have a total of 10 acts.

Saturday, August 23, 2014 – 1:00 pm

1pm – Lin Rountree, 2:30pm – Urban Jazz Coalition, 4pm – Tim Bowman, 5:45pm – Nick Colionne, Brian Simpson & vocalist Maysa, 7:30pm – Boney James.

Sunday, August 24, 2014 – 1:00 pm

1pm – Phil Denny & Oli Silk, 2:30pm – Michael Manson, 4pm – Jeff Lorber Fusion with Eric Marienthal & Jimmy Haslip , 5:45pm – Vocalists Lalah Hathaway & Ruben Studdard, 7:30pm – Alexander Zonjic with special guest Kenny G.

Keyboardist, composer and studio musician Brian Simpson is known for his ability to sculpt timeless love songs, soulful party anthems and melodies that stay on your mind. Hailing from Gurnee, Illinois, and growing up in a house filled with music, Brian always knew music would play center stage in his life. After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Simpson relocated to Los Angeles where he quickly immersed himself in the local jazz scene. Late night jazz sessions found him playing alongside everyone from saxophonists Everette Harp and Boney James to guitarist Norman Brown. But soon the free-spirited musician found himself taking a temporary leave of absence from the jazz scene, touring the world with pop divas Teena Marie, Sheena Easton and Janet Jackson. His foray into the pop world didn’t end there; in January 1991 he co-wrote the #1 Pop hit “The First Time” by Surface, which conquered both the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts.

Placing his success in pop aside, Brian Simpson has always been a working jazz musician. He has toured with some of the greats of recent jazz history, including George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, Kirk Whalum, and Jonathan Butler. Simpson’s breakthrough as a solo artist began in 2005 with “It’s All Good”, a track that hit #1 on the Radio & Records Smooth Jazz Airplay chart and remained in the Top 5 for four months. After “South Beach” in 2010, his latest album is called “Just What You Need” (2013). Brian has been the musical director for jazz saxophonist Dave Koz for the past 15 years, and for the last 8 years the Musical Director, of the highly popular “Smooth Jazz Cruise” featuring Marcus Miller and David Sanborn.
