George-Benson

He strums, he scats and now ten-time Grammy® winner George Benson croons the songs of his musical hero Nat King Cole with elegance and emotion. The legendary jazz guitarist and silky-smooth vocalist brings his show An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Benson will be accompanied by the North Charleston POPS! for this performance which has sold out Los Angeles’ Disney Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House and numerous other venues across Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. In addition, he will perform all of his greatest hits that George Benson fans know and love.

The North Charleston POPS! will be conducted by Randy Waldman, who led Barbra Streisand’s orchestra for 20 years, and who shares the spotlight as jazz pianist on several numbers in the program. The North Charleston POPS! recently performed with Earth, Wind and Fire at the North Charleston Coliseum and the national touring Broadway productions of WICKED and MARY POPPINS during their runs at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. The Unforgettable Tribute show will also feature a chorus and Benson’s touring band backing his heartfelt renditions of Nat King Cole’s greatest songs.

“To have the legendary George Benson on the same stage with the North Charleston POPS! singing the unforgettable songs of Nat King Cole is like three great shows in one! This very special combination is sure to create a magical night of music that will be talked about for years to come.” said Dave Holscher, North Charleston Performing Arts Center General Manager.

“The musicians of the North Charleston POPS! are thrilled to work with such a dynamic artist as George Benson!” said Tacy Edwards, North Charleston POPS! Manager. “Bringing popular music to life and working with the talented artists that appear at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center is a great joy for us”.

Tammy Greene, Founder and President of Jazz Diva Entertainment explained, “We are extremely pleased to present George Benson in the Carolinas once again, this time for the Lowcountry. This particular show is a rare opportunity to join the genres of jazz, pop, R&B and classical music together in a way that only an entertainer of legendary stature like George Benson can accomplish as he pays tribute the great Nat King Cole. This is a show that versatile music lovers should absolutely not miss. We are also happy to be partnering with our friends at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center who play host to the Lowcountry Jazz Festival every year. Additionally, to have such a renowned and respected group of musicians such as the North Charleston POPS! accompany George and his ban ensures that audience members will be presented with exactly the kind of evening that is stated in its bannering…’Unforgettable!’”

Benson’s recording, Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole just released in June 2013, replicates the spirit of the upcoming live performance and was created after four years of touring and development. It is perhaps the most meaningful of Benson’s career, featuring songs he learned and sang as a child, a testament to the classic timelessness of Cole’s music. The New Zealand Herald, in reviewing the live performance, stated, “…with a voice uncannily similar to Cole’s, a wide, bright grin and an enormous stage presence, Benson’s covers truly did journey back to the fifties and sixties… Benson’s powerful renditions reminded his audience why any night with Cole was Unforgettable.”

Audiences can likely also expect to hear some of Benson’s own classics, which propelled him to the first ever platinum jazz album in 1976. With a career spanning five decades and 35 recordings, there are plenty of hits to hope for during the show.

The show is presented by the North Charleston Performing Arts Center and Jazz Diva Entertainment, producer of the Lowcountry Jazz Festival.

Yarnell19

Jazz relief is on the way for victims of the recent Yarnell fire. The M.U.S.I.C. Foundation of Arizona and Arizona Jazz Festival producer Brad Laughlin have teamed with Phoenix City Council Member of District 8 Michael Johnson and Alan “AP” Powell to assemble a galaxy of contemporary jazz stars to perform a benefit concert for the families affected by the tragic fire, including the 19 families of the fallen firefighters and those who lost homes. The show featuring a bevy of hitmakers will be held this Friday, August 2nd at 7 PM at the Orpheum Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at www.arizonajazzfestival.com or by calling 602-244-8444. The minimum donation per ticket is $50.00 although digging deeper is encouraged.

The All-Star Jam will feature contemporary jazz and R&B luminaries George Benson, Brian Culbertson, Peter White, Euge Groove, Warren Hill, Michael Lington, Eric Darius, Jessy J and Dominic Amato along with other surprise guests.

“Dating back to (Hurricane) Katrina, BTWconcerts (producer of the Arizona Jazz Festival) has been donating funds whenever and wherever these devastating natural disasters occur, but this one, the Yarnell fire, happened right in our own backyard thus we had to do something significant to help our local community. We’re working with the local government and the firefighters to raise much needed funds. The artists generously agreed to waive their performance fees and the Orpheum Theatre stepped up to donate the venue. We’re (BTWconcerts) covering the costs to bring the artists in so that we can donate every dollar from ticket sales to assist the families of the fallen firefighters and those who lost their home,” said Laughlin.

“This is a tremendous loss for our community and we need to continue to support the families of those 19 firefighters not just today, but even years from now. We reached out and gathered an all-star line-up of jazz artist from across the country who wanted to help and all of them have waived their fees so we could give everything we make this night to the families and children of fallen firefighters,” said Johnson.

All of the proceeds will aid the victims of the Yarnell fire disaster through the 100 Club of Arizona, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides immediate financial assistance to families of public safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, and provides resources to enhance their safety and welfare.

The M.U.S.I.C. Foundation of Arizona purchased tickets and has set them aside so the families of the fallen firefighters can attend and be part of the evening.

Friday, August 2nd at 7:00 pm at the Orpheum Theatre.

Tickets are available at http://www.arizonajazzfestival.com/yarnell or by phone at 602-244-4444.

There is a minimum donation of $50.00 per ticket, although digging deeper is encouraged.

You can’t put together a record like this without putting your heart into it. I felt every moment of it. I got that from Nat King Cole, he put his heart into everything he did. I’m excited for you to hear this album. You can preview the entire album here and also check out the special deals that we have put together for you.

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I have making it.

Mahalia Jackson, often called the greatest gospel singer, returned to her hometown to appear at the first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April of 1970. While attending the Louisiana Heritage Fair in Congo Square (then known as Beauregard Square), she and Duke Ellington, who also appeared at the event, came upon the Eureka Brass Band leading a crowd of second-line revelers through the Festival grounds. George Wein, producer of the Festival, handed Ms. Jackson a microphone, she sang along with the band and joined the parade…and the spirit of Jazz Fest was born.

Inspired by the spirit of Mahalia Jackson and the Eureka Brass Band back in 1970, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival continues to celebrate the culture of Louisiana with the combined fervor of a gospel hymn and the joy of a jazz parade.

These artists will perform on the festival:

Hampton

The annual Hampton Jazz Festival presents the opportunity for us to marvel and appreciate the many visitors who journey here to enjoy American music at its best. This annual gathering has become more of a reunion – a celebration a friends, family, culture, music, and life.

The Hampton Jazz Festival is a major musical event started in 1968, and features many of the world’s major jazz artists. It is held during the last full weekend in June each year, with the primary venue being Hampton, Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum.

Festival organizers describe it as “the best available available jazz, R&B and blues artists that are on tour during the time of the festival… packaged at a reasonable price.” The Hampton Jazz Festival began in 1968 as a way to highlight great jazz. Held in the Hampton Colliseum the last full weekend in June, the annual event has hosted virtually every major jazz artist alive.

In the inaugural year, featured artists included Count Basie, Gary Burton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Mann Quintet, Thelonius Monk Quartet, Wes Montgomery, Dionne Warwick, and Muddy Waters. 1969, the second year, brought such notables as Booker T & the MGs, George Benson Quartet, Dave Brubeck Trio with Gerry Mulligan, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Gary Davis, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Sly and the Family Stone, and Herbie Hancock.

This 3-day festival features primarily R&B / jazz vocalists but also on this date, George Benson. The Forte Jazz Band featuring Brian Pinner opens.

Hampton Jazz Festival set for 28 – 30 June, 2013.
