TRICJazzFest

The Great American Songbook will hang with hip-hop-infused, genre-bending jazz and good ol’ New Orleans zydeco at the 34th Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland.

Natalie Cole, Michael Feinstein and Aaron Neville & Dr. John will headline the deep and varied festival, which kicks off Friday, April 19.

The schedule has been tweaked this year to feature two showcase weekends.

“It’s always been a 10- to 12-day span,” said JazzFest organizer Terri Pontremoli, who led the event from 2001 to ’04. “But what we’re doing this year is loading up on the weekends. We wanted something that feels more like a happening. People in the region can travel to downtown and see more than one concert in a night.”

Performer/composer Brian Simpson brings together a stellar lineup for an evening of contemporary jazz. Tokyo born keyboardist Keiko Matsui fuses Eastern, Western and world beat influences in her spiritually based compositions. Guitarist Marc Antoine has numerous No. 1 hits on the contemporary jazz charts, and he was named international artist of the year at the Chicago Jazz Awards in 2010. Versatile saxophonist Marion Meadows has enjoyed a robust solo career and played with Brook Benton, The Temptations, Michael Bolton and many others. Vocalist Phil Perry, a founding member of  The Montclairs, was named 2007 Male Vocalist of the Year in the SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards.

Saxophonist Marion Meadows is hiding something. Like a deft sleight-of-hand artist, there’s always something up his sleeve – something he’s not showing you outright – that ultimately reveals itself when the music starts. Somewhere in those mysterious spaces between the notes – at the convergence of melody, harmony and rhythm – the simple treasures and universal truths are laid bare for those whose ears and minds and hearts are open to discover them.

Born in West Virginia, saxophonist Marion Meadows whose ethnic mix is Native American, African American and Caucasian — is known for his Smooth and Soulful blend of Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and Funk.
