Napa2014

While in the midst of the vineyards last June to shoot a promotional clip for the third annual Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, the flourishing jazz and wine festival’s Founder and Artistic Director Brian Culbertson looked into the camera and vowed “More artists, more music, more food and of course, more wine.” The hit-making contemporary jazz and R&B mixologist is making good on his promise with the unveiling of the powerhouse lineup of jazz and funk artists that will perform for the many thousands of Getaway attendees who will come from all over the U.S. to Napa Valley from June 11-15, 2014.

Slated to join Culbertson for five-days of concerts, wine tastings, fine dining and unique social opportunities are Eric Benét, Lee Ritenour, David Grusin, Ohio Players, Morris Day & The Time, Earl Klugh, Mavis Staples, Average White Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Eric Darius, David Benoit, Michael Lington, Eric Marienthal, Jazz in Pink featuring Gail Jhonson, Althea Rene and Karen Briggs, Cecil Ramirez and the comedic mind of Keenen Ivory Wayans.

VIP Packages are already sold out with Four-day Gold Packages ($499) on sale now through the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway website (www.NapaValleyJazzGetaway.me). Two-day Silver Packages ($229) will go on sale in late November.

The 2014 Napa Valley Jazz Getaway will open with several VIP-only events as well as an exclusive Welcome Dinner Concert and Jam Session at renowned chef Cindy Pawlcyn’s Wood Grill and Wine Bar with a performance by the Cecil Ramirez Quartet along with Culbertson and saxophonist Lington for which a separate ticket is required (available through the Getaway website for $125). The Thursday night theme concert on June 12th will be Jazz Legends at the Lincoln Theater, which will also be the venue for Friday Night Funk Night. The music moves outdoors on June 14& 15 to the breathtakingly beautiful setting at Jamieson Ranch Vineyards for concerts that run from 4-10:30 PM. Afternoon happenings during the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway include a cigar and port event hosted by Lington with Ramirez and daily Wine Downs at the luxurious Westin Verasa Napa, the host hotel that for the first time will be solely reserved for guests of the Getaway. The Westin Verasa will also be the scene for the hot Late Night Hangs scheduled for Thursday through Saturday evenings post-concert during the Getaway at which fans can meet and mingle with the artists after their stroll down the Cab Carpet. As in previous editions of the Getaway, silent and live auctions will be held to benefit The GRAMMY® Foundation, which supports music education programs in schools, a mission of Culbertson, who raised nearly $100,000 for the organization during the first two Napa Valley Jazz Getaways.

Culbertson said, “It is extraordinary how much the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway has grown in just our third year and I’m so excited about our incredible lineup for 2014, our biggest and best yet. In addition to being joined by these legendary artists, I continue to invite more exquisite wineries to be involved with the Getaway as well as many more unique restaurants to be present at our outdoor events to provide a true ‘taste of Napa’ experience. I look forward to welcoming wine and jazz enthusiasts to the beautiful Napa Valley once again.”

Culbertson is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer who became a fan favorite for the vitality and prodigious skills that he brought to contemporary jazz ever since the release of his 1994 debut disc, “Long Night Out,” signaled the arrival of a consistently creative and engaging artist. The keyboardist and trombonist is back in the recording studio working on his 14th collection, a remake of the first album that he made in his crowded apartment bedroom “studio” while he was a 20-year-old college student. But this time out, instead of playing most of the instruments himself, he will be joined by an all-star collective of contemporary jazz artists comprised of many of the musicians that inspired him while recording the original. “Another Long Night Out” will be released in February 2014 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the first record. Additional information about Culbertson is available at www.BrianCulbertson.me.

Sax on the River was conceived by Trisha Friend while enjoying a Tom Braxton show at Harlow’s almost five years ago. During the final number of the night, several local musicians; Kim Waters, Jeff Clayton and Garrett Perkins joined Tom onstage. Four amazing saxophonists on the stage at one time, playing together, made her heart skip a beat. And the rest is history. The saxophone is an instrument that brings smiles to faces and makes people’s hearts sing and she wanted to bring that to her river event.

As a breast cancer survivor she created the event to promote breast cancer awareness, to give back to a non-profit organization that helps women cancer patients and their families and to share her love of jazz, particularly the saxophone, with all her friends and fellow jazz lovers in the Sacramento area.

In 2013 Sax on the River is sponsored by The Ol’Loreece Foundation which is dedicated to getting and keeping men healthy through awareness, support and entertainment. In the past Sax on the River has promoted women’s cancer awareness. This year we are excited to include men in our outreach to help promote health and cancer awareness.

Elan Trotman, vocalist Hazel Miller, Cecil Ramirez and Michael Lington perform at Sax on the River.

More than 24 contemporary jazz and R&B high rollers promise to make the Las Vegas Jazz Festival a winning bet. Tickets are now on sale for the 3-day music and lifestyle event to be held at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa on September 27-29, 2013 showcasing Grammy-winning and nominated soul singers and chart-topping instrumentalists.

The opening night of the Las Vegas Jazz Festival boasts a funky Friday lineup headlined by 2013 BET Lifetime Achievement Award winner Charlie Wilson, a 6-time Grammy-nominated vocalist who won a Soul Train Icon Award in 2009. A soulful pairing comprised of saxophonist Eric Darius and platinum-selling R&B singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Lyfe Jennings will take the stage first.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter India.Arie, veteran R&B crooner Jeffrey Osborne and saxman Euge Groove top the marquee on Saturday. Grammy-winning guitarist Norman Brown and sax powerhouse Richard Elliot join forces for a session filled with R&B grooves. Emerging sax player Dominic Amato will perform a mid-afternoon show following a trio segment featuring saxophonists Michael Lington and Jessy J with keyboardist Jonathan Fritzen. The day will begin with a hit-filled performance by saxophonist Paul Taylor, a Las Vegas native.

The closing program of the Las Vegas Jazz Festival presents two-time Grammy-nominated soul vocalist Kem followed by Grammy-winning soul singer Anthony Hamilton. Soul-jazz guitarist Jeff Golub unites with saxmen Warren Hill and Tom Braxton for what bodes to be a blues-singed set. Guitarist Nick Colionne brings Chicago-style fire and flamboyant fashion to his shows. Sax Pack Steve Cole, Jeff Kashiwa and Jackiem Joyner – always delivers a high-octane performance. The final day gets underway with Jazz in Pink, a trio of talented women consisting of keyboardist Gail Jhonson, violinist Karen Briggs and saxophonist Paula Atherton.

Tickets can be purchased for the entire Las Vegas Jazz Festival or as single-day events, but BTWconcerts.com’s Brad Laughlin, the producer and promoter of the festival, encourages guests to come for the weekend.

“Part of the magic of our jazz festivals is when guests come and totally immerse themselves in the music and lifestyle experience for the entire weekend. One of the reasons we produce our events at first-class resorts like the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa is to foster that feeling of community that takes place when concert goers spend the weekend enjoying the live music along with the plush accommodations and top-notch facilities. In addition to the extraordinary shows we go to great length to produce, our festivals are an opportunity for people to getaway, relax, socialize, network and form relationships. These aren’t just concerts; they are fun mini-vacations and our guests fly in from all over the country to join the party,” said Laughlin, whose company also produces the Arizona Jazz Festival and the San Diego Jazz Festival.

Starting at $65.00 for single-day ticket and $285.00 for a 3-day seat, tickets for the Las Vegas Jazz Festival are available online at www.lvjazzfestival.com and by phone at 602.244.8444.

Michael Lington live @ Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival 2013

Saxophonist Michael Lington is a native of Denmark. It was in 1990 that Lington moved to Los Angeles, becoming a U.S. citizen in 2008. He got his musical start in Bobby Caldwell’s band and later toured for three years with jazz and R&B legend Randy Crawford. The saxophonist has always been first-call for musical superstars. He’s opened arena shows for Barry Manilow and recently spent 18 months on tour with Grammy Award-winning singer Michael Bolton as his special guest.

Lington has been a familiar face on contemporary jazz since his self titled major-label debut in 1997. In 2008 he released “Heat”, which reached Top 5 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart and was chosen as JazzTrax’s Album of the Year. The lead track “You and I” was a #1 single, making it his 11th radio hit.

For his seventh CD “Pure” (2012), saxophonist Michael Lington returns to the basics for an organic, soul-jazz project that recalls the glory days of muscular contemporary jazz unburdened by pop constraints. The first single “Roadtrip”, which is produced and written by Lington and Brian Culbertson, is among most added and played songs at contemporary and smooth jazz radio and has a guest appearance by Lee Ritenour – the single hit #3 at the Billboard Jazz Song Charts.
