Wine & Jazz Festival, Laishley Park, Punta Gorda, Florida

Saturday, February 19, 2011 – 1:00 pm

One of the major jazz-fusion bands born in the ‘70s, the Yellowjackets have continued to evolve and create great new music across three decades. The group features original members Russell Ferrante (keyboards) and Jimmy Haslip (bass), along with world-class saxophonist Bob Mintzer and the return of drummer Will Kennedy. With imaginative compositions, powerhouse chops and deep funk grooves, they are among the premier working bands in jazz history.

Keyboardist Jeff Lorber emerged during the same period with six albums that he now calls “second generation fusion.” Always a phenomenal player and composer, Lorber’s trademark sound became widely emulated and he is also a respected record producer. For this SFJAZZ date, Lorber returns to his soulful, funk-laden brand of electric jazz. Joining Jeff in this contemporary all-star band are legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker (of Brecker Brothers fame) and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea Elektric band). Along with the Yellowjackets, this show is truly a slammin’ double-bill!

Join Smooth Jazz Lovers for “Notes in Shades of Pink,” a benefit for breast cancer awareness, featuring sultry saxophonist, JESSY J, with soulful-jazz flutist Althea Rene.

True Love. With these two perfectly chosen words, Jessy J has, in unveiling the title of her second Peak Records release, captured the blazing emotions of her legions of fans across the U.S. and Latin America who made her the breakout genre star of 2008.

With her sizzling mix of hot beats, Latin and samba rhythms, instantly captivating melodies, and model looks, this Mexican American saxophonist/singer proved quite the sensation with her debut CD Tequila Moon, earning her such accolades as Radio and Records “Debut Artist of The Year” and contemporary jazz song of the year by R&R and Billboard for the title track, which stayed perched at #1 for an incredible eight weeks. Adding to the multi-talented artist’s rising star was her cover story in Jazziz Magazine, features in People Espanol, and JazzTimes, to name a few, plus numerous television appearances and radio interviews.

Althea Rene‘s latest CD release No Restrictions has a unique urban contemporary flavor with a jazzy/R&B twist. She surrounds herself with some of today’s most influential music producers to create an unsurpassed collection of jams. Grammy winning producer Michael Broenig (Paul McCartney & Marion Meadows) leads the charge with the piping hot title track “No Restrictions”.

Grammy nominated producer Rex Rideout (Luther Vandross & Lalah Hathaway) delivers scorching remakes of the urban classics “Wishing on a Star” and “I Love Your Smile”. Chance Howard (Prince & The Time) takes it to another level with his sizzling Minneapolis groove “Do Ya Like Dat?” Producer Kendall Duffie (Mary Mary & Marvin Winans) puts his silky smooth touch on “Ladies Nite Out” which features guest appearances from recording artists, saxophonist Candy Dulfer and bassist Rhonda Smith. This collaboration of extraordinary talent can be called a “Red Hot” tour de force of musicianship and groovability.
