He later added piano, bass, guitar, flute and vocals, whilst during his formal training at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm he became one of the first students to receive a Masters degree in jazz. By the age of 22 Jonathan had performed on national Swedish television several times and toured with some of the countries most respected jazz musicians.

Three years later he recorded ‚Love Birds‘ and in doing so he made his mark as the first Swedish pianist to release a smooth jazz CD. Others followed, made him conquer both the Billboard airplay charts and the Amazon.com sales charts and marked Fritzén out as the master of delightfully accessible contemporary jazz. McMurray

Welcome to Season III of the Gallery Suite Jazz Series.

Since its inception in 2012, the Gallery Suite Jazz Series has been host to twenty two consecutive sold out showcases featuring a celebrated list of regional, national and international artists. Now in its third season, the series continues its tradition of offering some of the best entertainment in downtown Lansing performed by notable artists in various styles of the jazz idiom.

The Gallery Suite Jazz Series is hosted by International recording artist and saxophonist Phil Denny and takes place in downtown Lansing’s most unique and intimate artist-owned studio spaces. This hip, urban, raw venue with open wood ceilings, hardwood floors and exposed brick walls creates the ideal backdrop for you and your guests to experience a night of lively entertainment with an emphasis on diversion though pure musical artistry. With a limited seating capacity, those present will feel as though the music is being performed just for them.

This month’s featured artist is Detroit famed saxophonist and multi-instrumentaslist Dave McMurray. McMurray has his own style, which is inimitable. His life and career spans much of the evolution of contemporary jazz (even taking part in shaping said evolution), and he excels in all its many flavors. His solo sound is hard-edged and funky. McMurray has collaborated with nearly every industry superstar, including but not limited to Gladys Knight, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Raitt, Bootsy Collins, Bob James, and most recently Kid Rock (with whom he is currently touring) and Motown artist KEM, for whom he serves as musical director.

Paul Brown’s talent as artist and producer have earned him two Grammy Awards and an impressive string of more than 50 # 1 hits on Radio & Records’ contemporary and smooth jazz chart. In an illustrious career, Brown has worked on projects for such influential artists as George Benson, Al Jarreau, Kirk Whalum, Patti Austin, Norman Brown, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Euge Groove, Boney James, Rick Braun, and Peter White, among many others.

Brown was born and raised in L.A. He started playing drums at the age of five and picked up his first guitar two years later. After studying music at the University of Oregon, Brown returned to L.A. and began his rise to fame producing some of the biggest hits in contemporary jazz. In 2004, he finally stepped out from behind the producer’s chair and released his debut CD ‚Up Front‘. He earned a nomination for “Best Vocalist” at the 2011 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. On his seventh solo album ‚Truth B Told‘ (2014) he’s digging deeper into soul and blues, playing his 1963 Gibson Johnny Smith L-5 edgier and with more abandon.
