Welcome to Season III of the Gallery Suite Jazz Series.

Since its inception in 2012, the Gallery Suite Jazz Series has been host to twenty seven consecutive sold out showcases featuring a celebrated list of regional, national and international artists. Now in its third season, the series continues its tradition of offering some of the best entertainment in downtown Lansing performed by notable artists in various styles of the jazz idiom.

The Gallery Suite Jazz Series is hosted by International recording artist and saxophonist Phil Denny and takes place in downtown Lansing’s most unique and intimate artist-owned studio spaces. This hip, urban, raw venue with open wood ceilings, hardwood floors and exposed brick walls creates the ideal backdrop for you and your guests to experience a night of lively entertainment with an emphasis on diversion though pure musical artistry. With a limited seating capacity, those present will feel as though the music is being performed just for them.

This month’s featured artist is UK keyboardist Oli Silk!

Oli Silk is a keyboardist and producer from the UK. His professional musical journey began in 2000 as one half of jazz funk duo Sugar and Silk and together they released two albums in the UK and Europe. In 2003, he produced and co-wrote an album for saxophonist James Vargas which was released the following year by ‘Trippin’N’Rhythm Records’. Oli’s talent for writing and production caught the attention of the label who signed him, and in 2006 released his debut album ‘So Many Ways’ which received several awards in the industry. Following a top 20 radio single entitled ‘Easy Does It’ and over a dozen successful live performances in the USA, he recorded his 2nd album ‘The Limit’s The Sky’. Released in October 2008, it contained one of the biggest hits of the year ‘Chill Or Be Chilled’ which reached #3 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart and stayed on the chart for over a year!
Oli’s 2014 release ‘Razor Sharp Brit’ album went to #1 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Chart. ‘At Your Service’ is the title of the track, and it features Bassist and labelmate Julian Vaughn.

Oli’s skills as a producer, sound designer and mix engineer have been in demand for many years, he has composed and produced music used on numerous TV shows worldwide such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, MTV, Miami Ink, My Super Sweet 16, Hogan Knows Best and on coverage of Golf’s US Masters.

His abilities as a keyboardist have made him the UK’s ‘go to’ guy, playing for the likes of Boney James, Peter White, Chuck Loeb, Rick Braun, Gerald Albright, Mindi Abair, Dave Koz, Marc Antoine, Paul Brown and many more. He remains one of the most unique and exciting young artists in the genre.

Shoreline Jazz

Music enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys having a good time, may be happy to know that a jazz festival will return to Heritage Landing this summer. While the inaugural event in 2012 was the one-day Lakeshore Jazz Festival, this year’s festival features a new name – Alexander Zonjic’s Shoreline Jazz Festival — and an expanded schedule. The festival will be a two-day event this year, instead of the one-day event in 2012.

“I prefer to call the first one the pilot (festival),” said Alexander Zonjic, renowned flutist and co-organizer of the festival.

With a passion for jazz music and the Muskegon area, Hawkins Lang, the original organizer of the jazz festival in Muskegon, had an idea to create a music festival to celebrate the anniversary of his restaurant, Hawk’s Feathers and Finns. But what Lang didn’t expect while organizing the festival two years ago was the strong relationship he would begin to develop with Zonjic.

When the original headliner artist for the “pilot” jazz festival fell through, Lang came across Zonjic’s name, listened to his music and called Zonjic. Lang was surprised that Zonjic answered the phone. “I thought it was going to be his assistant (on the phone),” Lang said. From there, the two “just kind of hit it off.” Over time, Lang and Zonjic said they believe the festival will greatly benefit the area economically.

Zonjic, who has been both performing and working in the music festival business for more than 20 years, is excited about the Muskegon area. When he originally visited Muskegon, he said he knew Heritage Landing would be a wonderful place for a jazz festival. “My instincts kicked in and I thought ‘this would be so cool,’” Zonjic said. Zonjic said the idea of the festival is to have a large, cultural and diverse event in Muskegon.

Because the event is two days, Zonjic is hoping that jazz enthusiasts from Chicago and Detroit will visit the area. The music festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24. Tickets are expected to be available for purchase soon for the price of $25 per day.

The two-day jazz festival is set to have a total of 10 acts.
