Jazz is a splendid genre born of African and European roots and come to beautiful fruition amidst Southern black communities in the tumultuous times afflicting such communities in the early 20th century United States. Not just its sound, but its mere existence, speaks to powerful cultural roots oft overlooked or brushed aside by other genres that have risen to popularity since.

The Playboy Jazz Festival is an annual fest that seeks to honor this tradition while offering a stage with which new artists of the genre can be heard. It is a festival with a history going back over half a century and it remains popular to this day.

Don’t miss the 35th Anniversary! Come celebrate with Playboy and an amazing all-star lineup of the best jazz musicians around.

The 2012 Festival will also boast a performance by an up and coming contemporary artist set to burst onto the national stage and some of the best jazz talent in North Carolina. Friday, May 25

Brian Culbertson
Billboard chart topping artist, Brian Culbertson began his quest in music at the age of 8 on piano, adding drums at 9, trombone at 10 then bass at 12. With 12 albums that have passionately surveyed a broad spectrum of musical styles, Culbertson has prominently featured many of music’s finest players, including Patti Austin, Will Downing, Brian McKnight, Kenny Lattimore, Faith Evans, acoustic guitar legend Earl Klugh and William “Bootsy” Collins, to name a few. One thing that this multi-talented man’s fans can rest assured of is that Brian Culbertson always brings his very best – and the very best out of others – in all of his broad-ranging musical endeavors.

Sonny Rollins

Grammy award winner, Theodore Walter (Sonny) Rollins, established a reputation in the fifties first among musicians, then the public, as the most brash and creative young tenor on the scene. More than 50 years later, his extensive resume includes a performance Grammy for This Is What I Do (2000), and his second for 2004’s Without a Song (The 9/11 Concert). In August 2010, Rollins was named the Edward MacDowell Medalist, the first jazz composer to be so honored. And in March 2011, Rollins was presented the Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence, from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony.

Karrin Allyson

Multiple Grammy nominated singer and pianist has long been described as a “musician’s musician”. Among musicians, Karrin is known as a great bandleader and one of the great pleasures of the current scene is listening to her highly developed interplay with her bandmates — it sounds so effortless — but it conceals the deep musical sophistication. May 2011 marked a milestone for the artist, the release of Round Midnight, the thirteenth album in a series dating back to her 1992 debut album “I Didn’t Know About You.” Karrin currently lives in New York City, following a childhood in the midwest, schooling in the Bay Area, a degree in classical piano performance and important stints in Minneapolis and Kansas City, where she began her recording career with Concord Jazz. Music lovers and critics around the world marvel at the range of this extraordinary musician.
