“If I want sax, I call Candy” Megastar Prince once said adoringly – and he is not the only one with whom Candy Dulfer rings a bell – the Dutchwoman has long since made a name for herself internationally as a saxophonist. The daughter of the well-known Jazz saxophonist Hans Dulfer soon knew that she would be treading in her father’s footsteps. Candy started playing the sax as a six-year-old; at 14 she had a band of her own (Funky Stuff) with whom she works together up to the present day. In 1987 she put the heat on the audience as a supporting act for Madonna, and one year later she should have opened Prince’s shows in the Netherlands. When she received a cancellation at short notice she wrote him a letter of complaint. Which apparently was worth the effort: the man from Minneapolis invited her as a guest onto his stage. Since that day she repeatedly went on tours with him and can be heard on many of his albums. In 1990 Candy Dulfer`s first solo album “Saxuality” appeared and was an immediate success. Candy tours almost all of Europe and even performs in the U.S. With rewards: a Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Pop-Album Instrumental”. During the last years Candy Dulfer has worked together with Dave Stewart, Van Morrison, Sheila E., Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Aretha Franklin and Jonathan Butler.

Candy started another exciting new chapter in her versatile career with the release of her album ‘Crazy’ in the Fall of 2011. The close collaboration with Black Eyed Peas musical director and producer Printz Board forms the foundation of the daring new sound of the album. For the other tracks on the album Candy once again collaborated with Dutch producer and longtime guitarist Ulco Bed, who was responsible for Candy’s first major hits in her career with the albums “Saxuality” and “Sax-a-go-go”. Candy celebrates her maturity as a musician and plays with the most diverse elements form Pop, Soul and Jazz. Elements from Hip Hop and Rap are even more prominent here than in the past.

JEFF GOLUB live @ Germany’s greatest Soul, Funk & Jazz-Party

Guitar | Friday, September 13, 2013 at 08:00 pm

Golub was born on April 15, 1955, in Akron, OH, where he grew up listening to a variety of R&B, funk, blues, jazz, pop, and rock and began playing the guitar as a pre-adolescent. In the ’70s, Golub moved away from Akron to attend to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1980, he moved to New York City, where he is still residing.

Golub’s musical background is rich and diverse. It was in the early ’80s that Golub was hired to back arena rock/hard rock star Billy Squier, (7 LP’s and three world tours) and that association led to a lot of other session work. The list of major rock or R&B artists Golub backed in the ’80s or ’90s (either in the studio or on-stage) includes Tina Turner, John Waite, Vanessa Williams, Ashford & Simpson, Dar Williams, and former J. Geils Band vocalist Peter Wolf. In 1988, Golub was hired to back Rod Stewart, an association that lasted for seven years, four albums and five would tours.

1988 was also the year in which Golub’s first album as a leader, “Unspoken Words”, was released, but at that point, he was still devoting most of his time to backing other artists. It wasn’t until 1994, when Golub founded the band Avenue Blue, that playing as a leader became the guitarist’s main activity. That year Avenue Blue’s self-titled debut album fared well in the smooth jazz/NAC market. Two more Avenue Blue projects were released – “Naked City” in 1996 and “Nightlife” in 1997.

Starting with 1999’s album “Out of the Blue”, Jeff Golub presented himself again as a solo artist – followed by another seven solo albums. The year 2011 has been a roller coaster ride for Golub: in June, he became blind due to collapse of the optic nerve, later the year he released “Three Kings”, a tribute work to the music of Albert, B.B. and Freddie King. His latest album “Train Keeps A Rolling” will be available on August 13, 2013.

Here you can order your exclusive hotel package:
2 nights (September 13-15, 2013) incl. breakfast & all concerts: from 228,00 Euro per person in a double room
Concert tickets per day (without hotel): from 46,00 Euro per person

Joey Sommerville live @ Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg 2012 Trumpet | Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Trumpeteer Joey Sommerville has established a reputation as one of the most engaging and dynamic performers on the contemporary jazz scene. No matter the venue, he always seems to be able to connect with the audience, establish a relationship, and take them on a musical roller coaster ride, from Ellington ballads to P-Funk, to his own music which can best be described as a funky musical gumbo of Jazz, R&B, Gospel and World Music influences. His musical essence lies in the Baptist church. “When I was a teenager, I would judge the caliber of my playing by the number of people in the congregation who ‘got happy’. If you aren’t touching the listener’s soul, then you aren’t really playing music. Soul communication is the key.”

Joey was the featured instrumental soloist on the Cirque de Soleil’s Grammy-nominated and Juno Award winning album, “Alegria”. His solo album “Like You Mean It” garnered international airplay and led to numerous accolades and awards, including “The American Society of Young Musician’s All That Jazz Award” for 2009. In 2007, Joey started “The Smooth Jazz After Dark”-Series. “We started at an upscale supper club called Sambuca Jazz Café in Atlanta bringing in special guests to perform with my band. 2010 we ended up doing the shows at a 2,000 seat outdoor amphitheater.” Joey’s guest list has included musical luminaries Sheila E., Wayman Tisdale, Jeff Lorber, Paul Brown, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Golub, Chieli Minucci, Jackiem Joyner, Bob Baldwin und Eric Darius. Some of them also appear on his latest album. “The Get Down Club” is iconic, forward thinking contemporary jazz featuring funk, gospel and bop influences delivered with pop sensibilities.

John Stoddart live @ Smooth Jazz Festival Augsburg 2012 Piano & Vocals | Friday, September 14, 2012 at 7:30 pm

John grew up in a musical family and was singing and playing the piano in church almost as soon as he could walk. His formal training began at 13, convincing him that he had found his career. In 1993, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano and Voice from Washington Adventist University (formerly Columbia Union College) in Takoma Park, Maryland. He quickly began to accrue credits as a session vocalist, arranger, songwriter and producer with artists such as Boney James, Al Jarreau, Celine Dion, Patti Austin, Darin Atwater and the Soulful Symphony, Will Downing, Take 6 and Bob James.

John has also partnered with saxophonist Kirk Whalum as co-producer, arranger and/or musician on several of Kirk’s Grammy-nominated recordings. John was the associate producer on Whalum’s song “It’s What I Do”, which won a Grammy in 2011. John’s composition “I Still Believe,” featured on “Faith | Hope | Love”, was first featured on guitarist Norman Brown’s album “Just Chillin'”. Blue-eyed soul legend Michael McDonald contributed lead vocals to the song, which won the Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

While John is a sought-after collaborator, he is first and foremost a solo artist who records and tours on his own when he’s not sharing his gift with other artists. Five of his six albums have been released on his own label. His latest release “Faith | Hope | Love” is a soulful collection of inspirational love songs that speak to the challenges and triumphs of marriage.
